Promoting Unified Biology for Sustainable Living Prof. L. S. Shashidhara. The Professor is the Past president of International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS).

During his recent visit to Uganda, Prof. L. S. Shashidhara, Director of the National Centre for
Biological Sciences and Professor of Biology at IISER Pune, India, engaged with key institutional
representatives. He met with the Executive Secretary of the Uganda National Council for Science and
Technology (UNCST), the Heads of the Departments of Wildlife and Aquatic Animal Resources
(WAAR) and Zoology, Entomology, and Fisheries Sciences (ZEFS) at Makerere University Kampala, as
well as the Ambassador of the Indian High Commission in Kampala.
The highlight of his visit was a public lecture, moderated by Dr. Akite Papertra, a senior lecturer at
ZEFS. The lecture, titled “From Darwin to Diabetes: Transformations in Biology,” was attended by
representatives from government institutions, academia, and students. It emphasized the
importance of unified biology for sustainable living, covering topics such as bio-nomenclature,
ecology, biodiversity, public health, and agriculture.
This visit has opened strategic opportunities in the scientific community, including potential
pathways for Ugandans to pursue an MSc program in Wildlife Conservation Sciences.
